Summary

GOD this book was amazing i really love highsmith’s writing style and how well the story was developed, i remember watching a review video of this book and people say that it’s not her best work But i personally enjoyed it to the fullest

I'm unsure if I just missed something in this book or maybe it just wasn't for me, however I found this book to be extremely slow paced & very difficult to actually get through & finish。 I'm unsure if I just missed something in this book or maybe it just wasn't for me, however I found this book to be extremely slow paced & very difficult to actually get through & finish。 。。。more

Very good writer

I see where the author was going。 The character studies seem a dated today。 The ending seemed a little contrived to me。

A fascinating and disturbing journey。 Patricia Highsmith is eloquent in her description of a psychopath。

Highly recommended as a quick summer read for those who love mysteries。

This book was not an easy read。 It was illustrative of the mores and norms of the 1950's。 And, when read through that lens, there are some interesting aspects of the book。 However, I did not connect with any of the characters and the primary storyline of the book was not in alignment with my personal values。 Why did I read it? 3。5 Stars。 Interesting plot and I was already a fan of Highsmiths writing after reading Carol。 I don’t usually go for crime novels which is why this is a lower rating than it maybe deserves

Casey

definitely a twist。 was great detailing and kept me hooked the entire time。

Least fav of my Highsmith reads thus far but I still really enjoyed。 I love how she develops her characters, as well as the crazy, deep-rooted feelings she portrays in each of them。 3。5 stars

Do not read this book while you're already anxious。 About anything, not just whether you'll be caught for murdering someone。 Do not read this book while you're already anxious。 About anything, not just whether you'll be caught for murdering someone。 。。。more

*airplane read* Man that first chapter was absolutely engrossing。 But besides that I think this is the case where its me and not the book as I felt it went too long (surprising, as it's a fairly short book), and in one of those rare cases, I just preferred the movie over the book。 *airplane read* Man that first chapter was absolutely engrossing。 But besides that I think this is the case where its me and not the book as I felt it went too long (surprising, as it's a fairly short book), and in one of those rare cases, I just preferred the movie over the book。 。。。more

I found this book deeply disturbing and it was really difficult to read more than a few pages at a time 。 The need to surface and breathe some clean air was overwhelming ! The sheer class of the writing deserves a 5* rating never mind the psychological tension created between the 2 male protagonists。 A piece of literary art。

What Patricia Highsmith is marvellous at, is building suspense。The story is simple。 Two men trading murders。 “We murder for each other, see? I kill your wife and you kill my father!”。This psychological thriller moves。 The dialogue is what you expect from the 50’s and the characters are fascinating。 Some people like descriptive passages, I’m more into snappy dialogue and an intriguing storyline when it comes to a thriller and Patricia does this well。She always throws in the average ‘Joe’ into a w What Patricia Highsmith is marvellous at, is building suspense。The story is simple。 Two men trading murders。 “We murder for each other, see? A good thriller, a bit philosophically wordy at times, but finishes well towards a surprising conclusion。 (Have not seen the movie。)

Solid read that aged well。 I loved how neurotic the characters became as the story progressed。 。。。。。。

This is one of those books I like thinking about, writing about, and talking about more than I do the actual reading of it。 I just get so depressed and stressed out when I'm reading noir。 And while this is a thriller, it's more of a psychological one than it is twisty and turny, and thus fun。 Full rating and review later。 This is one of those books I like thinking about, writing about, and talking about more than I do the actual reading of it。 I just get so depressed and stressed out when I'm reading noir。 And while this is a thriller, it's more of a psychological one than it is twisty and turny, and thus fun。 Full rating and review later。 。。。more

This should’ve just been a short story, but Sigmund Freud, you would’ve loved this shit。

This is the second Patricia Highsmith book I have read, after the atypical “Carol。“ The book is way darker and way creepier than the movie。 I listened to the audiobook, which was masterfully read by Bronson Pinchot, who greatly enhanced the experience。

Overall I did really enjoy this novel, although I ended up wishing it had been longer while also feeling bored at some points ? I expected this to be a murder mystery type novel with a tight plot and unputdownable suspense。What I got was a psychological portrait of an alcoholic psychopath and his unfortunate victim that could have been 100 pages shorter。 things I liked: the lead up to the ending, the beginning and some bits in the middle。 things I disliked: 1。 the pacing and the predictable first two thirds succeeding the opening chapters - some of the middle sections were such a drag and although the progression of even I expected this to be a murder mystery type novel with a tight plot and unputdownable suspense。What I got was a psychological portrait of an alcoholic psychopath and his unfortunate victim that could have been 100 pages shorter。 things I liked: the lead up to the ending, the beginning and some bits in the middle。 things I disliked: 1。 the pacing and the predictable first two thirds succeeding the opening chapters - some of the middle sections were such a drag and although the progression of events and deteriorating states of mind of our two antiheroes was skilfully rendered it was all so predictable and repetitive。 Maybe we were supposed to be caught up with Guy's fall from grace and share his impending sense of doom - I get what was being attempted and even see how it was done well and could've worked but it just didn't quite land with me somehow。2。 the actual ending in itself and the fact that Highsmith totally shortchanged the only female character of any import (view spoiler)[ maybe nobody else was rooting for Anne to crack Guy and Bruno's secret or cared about her reaction to his confession but personally I was there for it。 The last few pages just finally made their relationship interesting and created some suspense around her figuring things out and then instead of following through we just got a completely unsatisfying and abrupt ending with Owen Markham。 Yes, I get it, Guy's unhinged monologuing was supposed to echo Bruno on the train and probably we were supposed to feel frustrated and unsettled and everything, but there was just so much build up to him being caught by Gerard and confessing and it ended up being so underwhelming - I just needed to stay in the story a bit longer。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more
